ENGAGE: Symposium

Selected date

Saturday February 22

Selected time

10:00 AM  –  4:00 PM

This day-long symposium is inspired by the exhibition Black is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite currently on view in at MoAD. Featuring scholars, artists, curators, and art writers who will join us for insightful conversations centered on the ways in which our contemporary understandings of Blackness has been informed by photographers since the dawn of photography in the 1890s through the present. We will explore how Blackness has been represented or misrepresented in the media, hip hop culture, archives, and in art museums and galleries. The day begins with a keynote address by Dr. Deborah Willis, followed by inspiring panel discussions, live music and dance performances, and a catered lunch. MoAD will fully livestream the event
